New Tour for 2016! Baseball Goes to War

Baseball players during WWII
Eighth Airforce Allstars 1943

We have an exciting new tour for July 2016! Our “Baseball Goes to War Tour” is a WWII baseball tour that tells the amazing story of the sport and its players, among them Yogi Berra, during this time in our nation’s history.

No professional sport in America contributed more to victory than baseball. Nearly 4,500 major leaguers and minor leaguers served Uncle Sam during World War II. Back in the 1940s, there was an adage common in America: “We are all in this together,” and for baseball that was true. Players never would have thought about avoiding the draft. They willingly served, sacrificed, and some gave their lives for victory. Nearly 90 percent of those who played in the 1941 season served, in some capacity, in the war effort.

The three fantastic historians who will be leading this tour are Todd Anton, Gary Bedingfield and Bill Nowlin. Todd and Bill co-wrote When Baseball Went to War, and were advisors along with pitching legend Curt Schilling for a Fox News “War Stories” special on baseball and WWII. Gary operates the Baseball in Wartime website and authored Baseball in World War II in Europe and Baseball’s Dead of World War II.

They will share the personal stories of these players at some of the most important sites in WWII, among them Sainte-Mère-Église, Omaha Beach, Utah Beach, the American Cemetery in Hamm and Bastogne.
