Happy Valentine’s Day!

D-Day Veteran Norwood Thomas with Wartime Sweetheart

We love romance! And it doesn’t get any more romantic than this sweet story about a D-Day veteran who will be reuniting with his wartime sweetheart just in time for Valentine’s Day.

As reported in the Washington Post article, “93-year-old WWII soldier to spend Valentine’s Day with long-lost wartime love,” veteran Norwood Thomas reconnected with Joyce Miller, the British woman he left behind when the war ended, via Skype last November.

Joyce now lives in Australia, and through the kindness of strangers, Norwood will be flying down to see her once again after 71 years. As Norwood says in the article, “I’m numb. I have no idea what my emotions are going to be once we meet face to face.”

Well, we know what our emotions are right now. Our hearts are swelling and we have a tear in our collective eye.

Connie Kennedy, who was an assistant to our chief historian Ron Drez on our 70th Anniversary D-Day Tour, had the pleasure of meeting Norwood in France during that tour. With another one of our historians Kevin Hymel as editor, she has been working on an article about Norwood’s WWII wartime experience and hopes to be finished soon. As she says, “Norwood is a great person to talk with,” so we expect a very interesting account of the life of this exceptional veteran. We look forward to sharing the article with you as soon as it is published.

You can read the entire article and watch a wonderful video of Norwood, D-Day hero and hopeless romantic, on the Washington Post website.

Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone in our Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours family!
