Stephen Carney has more than 30 years of experience as a military historian and educator. He recently retired from federal service after over 23 years as a U.S. Army historian. His final assignment was as the Command Historian of Arlington National Cemetery, a position he held for nearly 15 years. During his tenure, he created the Cemetery’s education and interpretation programs and led hundreds of tours for heads of state, presidents, prime ministers, monarchs, and senior military and government leaders from the United States and abroad.

Before joining Arlington National Cemetery, Carney served as a historian at the U.S. Army Center of Military History (CMH). His work included service in the Pentagon Forward Office, conducting oral history interviews related to the September 11, 2001 terror attack, and authoring several official Army publications. His contributions include volumes on the U.S. Army’s role in the Mexican War, such as The Occupation of Mexico, as well as Coalition Partners at War: Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Carney spent much of his CMH career as a staff ride historian, leading more than 675 staff rides for the Army, Navy, Air Force, Department of Defense, and other official groups.

His work has been recognized with multiple honors, including the Department of Defense Spirit of Service Award.

Carney now provides leadership development programs, historical consulting, and professional coaching services for a wide range of organizations and audiences.
