Italian Campaign Tour: Sicily to Rome 2026

Tour Itinerary: https://www.wetravel.com/i/69025f6f7cdfb60d73642903#day-1-october-10thThe Italian Campaign: Sicily to Rome Tour covers the Allied effort in Italy during World War II. Sometimes referred to as “the Forgotten Campaign,” it was actually of terrific significance. As historians have noted, the campaign became a proving ground for Allied capabilities on sea, land, and in the air. Amphibious landings with Higgins crafts on the beaches of Italy provided crucial training for the Normandy invasion. Proceeding to fight and push the Germans north, the Allied forces in Italy created another front for Hitler, dividing his defense of the Reich.Winston Churchill called Italy, the “soft underbelly,” of Europe, but the 5th Army as commanded by General Mark Clark found the campaign for Italy anything but “soft.” As you travel from Sicily to Rome, you will learn how the war in Italy was literally and figuratively an uphill struggle pitched against one of the most competent commanders in the German war machine, Field Marshal Albert Kesselring. Along the way, you will also enjoy the culture of the country itself. The cuisine, art and scenery on this tour are unrivaled.

Tour Itinerary: https://www.wetravel.com/i/68fa7ea79748a1b70c8a7844#day-1-october-17thThe Civil War: Mississippi River Campaign Tour visits the sites and battlefields fought along the Mississippi River, including Memphis, Shiloh, Vicksburg, Port Hudson and New Orleans. This tour was inspired by Stephen Ambrose’s books, Upton and the Army and A Wisconsin Boy in Dixie, as well as Struggle for Vicksburg, a short battlefield guide that Ambrose boasted sold more copies than any of his bestsellers.Ambrose revered the Mississippi River as the great artery of national commerce. He also recognized the primary significance of the rail lines as the links that tied the Confederacy together from east to west. Connecting the Gulf of Mexico to Kentucky, the rails were the sinews of the rebellion—and the cords of Union that Federal armies must control to win the war. In addition to studying the tactics of battle, the logistics of war and the clash of opposing forces, this tour is also designed to reveal something of the great American way of life that thrives below the Mason Dixon line.

Tour Itinerary: https://www.wetravel.com/i/694995aae9e1e02c3837a708#day-1-october-28thVietnam evokes vivid images of jungles, helicopters, and distant battlefields, holding different meanings for each generation. For many Americans, French, and Vietnamese, it was a place where loved ones were forever changed or lost, a war witnessed nightly on television and now remembered through films and games. Today, Vietnam is a thriving country attracting travelers and digital nomads, yet the war remains a symbol of military overreach, public fatigue, and the limits of foreign intervention. As the first American conflict extensively broadcast from the front lines, Vietnam reshaped both warfare and media. U.S. involvement spanned nearly three decades, ending with the fall of Saigon in 1975. LTC John Vann captured its complexity, saying, 'We do not have twelve years of experience, but one year twelve times.'On this tour, set for November of 2026, you will explore this multifaceted war—from Hanoi through the key regions and battles—revealing the ever-changing nature of the conflict depending on where and when it was fought. Please join the interest list below to receive all updates; dates and prices will be announced mid December.

Our exclusive Manhattan Project Tour takes you on a journey through the Manhattan Project National Historic Park System. You will follow the progress of the making of the atomic bomb from its early stages at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to the B Reactor in Hanford, Washington, to the Los alamos National Laboratory where the bombs were designed and assembled, to the successful testing at the Trinity Site in New Mexico.Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered the establishment of the Manhattan Project in 1942. The goal was two-fold: develop the atomic bomb for fear the Germans would have it first, and advance American victory in WWII. Military experts urged using the bomb because it would prevent the loss of perhaps hundreds of thousands of U.S. soldiers as well as millions of Japanese. The atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki hastened Japan’s surrender and forced an end to the war in the Pacific. The Manhattan Project involved the U.S. military and some of the world’s leading scientific minds. Ultimately, the project employed over 250,000 Americans who worked at universities, factories and laboratories across the nation. Their diligent work was hugely successful and American science and industry prevailed. Their work ushered in the nuclear age and forever changed the world.Your historian will take you through each phase of the project and local experts will share their insights and detailed knowledge about the development, actual testing and the devastating effects of the atom bomb.

Mighty Eighth Air Force

Mighty Eighth Air Force

The Mighty Eighth Air Force Tour commemorates the 80th anniversary of the start of the Combined Bomber Offensive. From 1943-45 tens of thousands of young men were involved in a deadly experiment. The airmen of RAF Bomber Command and the USAAF Eighth Air Force were thrown into the teeth of Axis air defenses to see if, for the first time in history, an enemy nation could be brought to its knees through strategic bombing. For 29 months, streams of Allied bombers pummeled occupied Europe. Three million tons of ordnance was dropped, and Germany’s greatest cities were left in rubble.Eighty years after the start of the combined bomber offensive, historians still argue about the effectiveness of this massive bombing campaign. What there can be no argument about, however, is the incredible bravery of the thousands of young airmen, more than 150,000 of whom made the supreme sacrifice. You will study this most important campaign of World War II in unparalleled detail, learning about the brave men of the Mighty Eighth, visiting the aircraft, and exploring the places where they made history.

Patton’s War in the Mediterranean: North Africa to Sicily

Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours is excited to offer an exclusive new tour: Patton’s War in the Mediterranean: North Africa to Sicily.General George S. Patton’s combat campaigns in North Africa and Sicily set the stage for the fighting in Europe. On November 8, 1942, Patton’s forces landed in Morocco and fought for three days against the Vichy French. In February of 1942, Patton took command of the U.S. II Corps, which had been defeated at the Kasserine Pass in Tunisia. In just twelve days, he reinvigorated the force and went on the offensive. Next, he led the Seventh Army into southern Sicily, raced north to Palermo, and then turned east. He drove for Messina, the key city in Sicily, launching three amphibious attacks along Sicily’s northern shore. The victories in North Africa and Sicily taught the American army how to fight and provided them valuable experience for the rest of the war.The Patton’s War in the Mediterranean Tour will explore these important battlefields. The tour will be led Patton expert Kevin M. Hymel, author of Patton’s War: An American General’s Combat Leadership, Volume I, November 1942 -July 1944, Patton’s War: An American General’s Combat Leadership, Volume 2: August–December 1944, and Patton’s Photographs: War as He Saw It.We will be announcing the tour details in the summer 2025. 6888th Legacy Tour
Dec 1 - 10, 2026

6888th Legacy Tour

The 6888th Legacy Tour sheds light on the extraordinary yet little-known story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. This remarkable story of the only African American Women’s Army Corps (WAC) unit to serve in Europe during World War II, has been made into a movie by Tyler Perry: The Six Triple Eight. As Allied forces waged brutal battles across Europe—pushing the German Army from the beaches of Normandy to the heart of Germany itself—millions of troops were far from home, enduring unimaginable hardships. Letters and packages from loved ones became a lifeline, providing comfort, morale, and a vital connection to home. However, by 1945, warehouses in Birmingham, England, overflowed with millions of undelivered pieces of mail, threatening to sever this critical connection.Into this chaos stepped the 6888th. With the war still raging and morale dwindling, this battalion of trailblazing women—faced with austere wartime conditions and relentless workloads—processed the massive backlog of mail in record time, restoring communication for over 7 million troops and government workers stationed in Europe. In just three months, they achieved the impossible, lifting spirits on the front lines and ensuring that soldiers fighting in deadly conditions received the letters that reminded them of what they were fighting for. Their work had an immeasurable impact on the morale of the troops, who carried these words of love and encouragement as they stormed the beaches of Normandy, pushed through France, and fought toward victory in Europe. On this tour, you will follow in the footsteps of the 6888th, tracing their historic mission from Birmingham, England, to Paris, France. You’ll visit the places where their story unfolded, from the warehouses where they broke records to the Normandy American Cemetery, where three of these remarkable women are laid to rest. Along the way, you will immerse yourself in the larger context of World War II history—exploring sites such as the Churchill War Rooms, Bletchley Park, and the invasion beaches of Omaha and Utah. By walking the same ground where the Normandy invasion unfolded, you will gain a deeper understanding of the brutal realities faced by the troops and the crucial role the 6888th played in sustaining their spirits during one of the most challenging chapters in history.

Scotland Jacobite Rising

Scotland’s Northern Highlands are a place of mysterious beauty, where Scottish descendants will find a welcoming homeland, and where all travelers will find a unique and inspirational history. As you’ll learn from our Scotland Jacobite Rising Tour, the Highlands have not always been so inviting. In the wake of its defeat by the British army in the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, Northern Scotland was left with its lands ravaged and its population either annihilated or exiled. The seeds of the Rebellion were sown in 1603, with England’s first Stuart king, James I, at the time King James VI of Scotland. In 1688 his Catholic grandson, King James II, was deposed and fled to France. Nevertheless, the Stuarts held the throne until 1714, when the House of Hanover assumed the crown.By 1745, Prince Charles Edward—Bonnie Prince Charlie—was the third generation of Stuarts in exile. Counting on help from France and from Stuart loyalists—the Jacobites—Charles entered Scotland in July of 1745, with the aim of winning back the crown for his father.Jacobites earned surprising victories at Falkirk and Prestonpans, and, though seriously outnumbered, held off the British at Fort William and other sites. Their luck ran out at Culloden, where they were slaughtered in a savage fight.

Ghost Army of WWII Tour

Ghost Army of WWII Tour

The Ghost Army of WWII Tour tells the story of the unsung WWII heroes of the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops and the 3133rd Signal Company Special, known as “the Ghost Army.” These deception troops saved thousands of lives and helped win the war, but their efforts were kept secret for 50 years. This “traveling road show of deception” used inflatable tanks, sound effects and illusion to fool the Germans more than 20 times from Normandy to the Rhine. U.S. Army analysis categorized the Ghost Army’s exploits this way: “Rarely, if ever, has there been a group of such a few men which had so great an influence on the outcome of a major military campaign.” They were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2022.You will begin in England where the top secret unit trained and travel on to Normandy, Brittany, Belgium and Luxembourg to study the key deception operations that were a pivotal part of the Allied victory. Your historian for this tour will be Rick Beyer, who produced and directed the award-winning PBS documentary The Ghost Army, and co-wrote (with Liz Sayles) The Ghost Army of World War II.

Battle of the Bulge 2026

Tour Itinerary: https://www.wetravel.com/i/69038a8b7cdfb60d73668cf7#day-1-december-9thOur Battle of the Bulge Tour takes a detailed look at the American men and German soldiers who opposed them in the largest land battle in WWII. On December 16, 1944, the Germans launched their Ardennes Campaign, better known as the Battle of the Bulge. For 31 grueling days, American troops fought in bitter cold, heavy snow and icy water. In one of the most epic and decisive victories of the war, they held their foxholes under the threatening skies of a Teutonic winter. As Stephen Ambrose wrote of the Ardennes in Citizens Soldiers, many of the men on the thinly-held Belgian front lines were recently-arrived “replacements.” Only just out of training, untested, and poorly-equipped, they were sent to the front lines with instructions on how to avoid trench-foot and told to kill Germans. It was a cruel experience in which raw courage merged with terrific faith, training, skill and ingenuity to save the day.You will travel from Brussels to the Ardennes to visit Malmedy, Bastogne, Diekirch and more of the areas that defined this fierce struggle. As you follow in the path of these heroes and visit the battlefields, you will gain a new respect for the basic patriotism that defeated the Germans and won World War II for the Allies.

Ghost Soldiers of Bataan and the Hellships - April 5th, 2027

Tour Itinerary: https://stephenambrosetours.com/tour/ghost-soldiers-of-bataan-and-the-hellships-a-tour-of-the-philippines/Thirteen days in the Philippines, on the ground of the largest surrender in American history and the captivity that followed it.In April 2027, eighty-five years after the fall of Bataan, you can stand where it happened. This 13-day Philippines WWII tour takes you from Kilometer Zero at Mariveles along the Bataan Death March route. You’ll cross Manila Bay to the fortress island of Corregidor, stand beneath the Memorial Cross on Mount Samat, and walk the ground at Camp O’Donnell and the Cabanatuan POW camp made famous in Ghost Soldiers. The story ends where the war in the Philippines turned, on Red Beach at Leyte, where MacArthur waded ashore and kept his promise to return. Few Americans ever see these places, and fewer still see them in the order the men who fought here lived them. You won’t be seeing it alone or reading it off a plaque. The tour is led by an expert historian who has taken many Americans along this route. He brings the siege, the march, the camps and the hellships to life on the very ground where they happened, while a dedicated tour manager handles every detail. Between the battlefields you’ll stay four nights at the legendary Manila Hotel, where MacArthur lived before the war, and take a private look at his suite and archives. You’ll share dinners with fellow travelers who came for the same reason you did.For many of our guests, this journey is personal. It might be a father’s footsteps on Bataan, a grandfather’s name at the Manila American Cemetery, where a private wreath laying can be arranged, or simply a debt of remembrance that has waited too long. The Bataan anniversary comes only once, the dates are fixed, and places on this departure are limited. Join us in April 2027 for a trip you’ll carry with you for the rest of your life.

You’ll meet the famous, the infamous, and the villainous figures who played out the dramatic struggle to forge a new nation.Boston. The birthplace of the American Revolution. Dramatic events such as the Stamp Act Riots, the Boston Massacre, and the Boston Tea Party moved America relentlessly closer to Revolution.Simmering conflict boiled over into open warfare in the spring of 1775, with skirmishes at Lexington and Concord, and ferocious fighting at Bunker Hill. Two weeks later, a 43-year-old Virginia planter named George Washington rode into Cambridge, Massachusetts, to take over the newly formed Continental Army. For the first two and half years of war, the rugged country between Boston and Quebec witnessed a dozen battles – including some of the bloodiest engagements of the Revolution. Italian Campaign Tour: Sicily to Rome - May 22nd, 2027

Tour Itinerary: https://www.wetravel.com/i/696a7225eb4faa70ba4b69d0#day-1-may-22ndThe Italian Campaign: Sicily to Rome Tour covers the Allied effort in Italy during World War II.

You stay all seven nights at the Heritage Park Hotel on the Honiara waterfront, overlooking the water where dozens of American and Japanese ships were sunk in 1942. Touring days run about five hours, leaving afternoons free to rest, explore Honiara, or return to a site on your own. If you want to understand why Guadalcanal mattered, and to be there for the anniversary, this is the place and the week to do it.

Scotland Jacobite Rising - August 11th, 2027

Scotland Jacobite Rising - August 11th, 2027

Up the Slot: Guadalcanal and the Solomons - August 12th, 2027

Tour Itinerary: https://stephenambrosetours.com/tour/up-the-slot-guadalcanal-and-the-solomon-islands-campaign/For six months in 1942 and 1943, the Solomon Islands were the hinge of the Pacific war. The American landing on Guadalcanal on August 7, 1942 was the first Allied ground offensive of the Pacific, and what followed was a campaign fought simultaneously in the air, on the water and in the jungle, a grinding contest of attrition that neither side had planned and that neither could afford to lose. This is a rare chance to see that battlefield the way the men who fought it did: from the deck of a ship. Seven nights aboard the Bilikiki carry you up the island chain the Americans called the Slot, anchoring each night in sheltered water, walking beaches and airstrips that are otherwise unreachable, and swimming over wrecks that have lain where they sank for more than eighty years. The cruise ends where it began, at Guadalcanal, for three days ashore on the ground that gave the campaign its name. Most of these sites see a handful of visitors a year. There are no ticket booths and no interpretive centers. What there is, is the ground itself, largely unchanged, and a historian to explain what happened on it.

Market Garden to the Alps - Aug 21, 2027

The Market Garden to the Alps Tour follows in the footsteps of the Allies as they marched through Europe to victory over Nazi Germany. Operation Market Garden, launched in Holland in September 1944, was to be a major Allied thrust across the Rhine River into Germany with the ultimate goal of seizing Berlin. Market Garden was a bold move that failed. The Battle of the Bulge was the opposite of Market Garden. Americans fought the Germans for 31 grueling days in bitter cold, heavy snow and icy water in the largest land battle of WWII. It was one of the most epic and decisive victories of the war.You will travel from Amsterdam to the Ardennes, Bastogne, and Luxembourg as you learn about these key events in WWII history. You will then continue to Germany, where you will study the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich in Nuremberg, the scene of massive Nazi Party rallies in the 1930s, and later the war crime trials of the perpetrators of inhumanity across Europe. Finally, at Berchtesgaden, Hitler’s Alpine retreat in Bavaria, you will see where he and his henchmen lived in luxury while they built an evil empire on the backs and blood of millions of innocent people. This is an ideal tour for people who have traveled with us on our Operation Overlord Tour, and for those who have already experienced Normandy or are interested in Operation Market Garden and the Battle of the Bulge.

Sep 4 - 16, 2027

D-Day to the Rhine - September 4th, 2027

Our D-Day to the Rhine Tour commemorates the Allied invasion of Normandy that led to victory in Europe in WWII. Stephen E. Ambrose first designed our D-Day tour itinerary in 1978 when he began his intense study of the D-Day invasion, the Normandy Campaign and western front in WWII. As part of his research, Ambrose travelled with countless veterans to find the sites where they trained in the United Kingdom and the battlefields where they made history in Europe. His extensive study of the European Theater of Operations led to his bestselling books on the subject, D-Day: June 6, 1944, Citizen Soldiers and Band of Brothers, among others.Ambrose’s research produced the unrivaled experience that we offer on our D-Day to the Rhine Tour. His expertise was directly handed down to the next generation of historians who have continued to document the battlefield memories of hundreds of WWII veteran soldiers and officers at the very places where they fought. Their vast canon of knowledge is what makes our D-Day tour so authentic. Your historian will share these personal stories and their WWII expertise with you at every stop.

WWII Poland and Germany Tour - September 4th, 2027

The WWII Poland and Germany Tour covers the beginning and end of World War II. The first shots of the war rang out in Gdansk, Poland, on September 1, 1939. You will then wind your way to Berlin, where some of the fiercest battles of the war were fought, stopping along the way in Krakow, Warsaw, and Zagan. Auschwitz, Stalag Luft III of The Great Escape fame, and the Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory and Museum are among the notable sites you will visit.Guests who have traveled on this tour rave about the charm of these historic cities and towns, the warmth of the people, and the outstanding restaurants, many of which are located in beautiful buildings that date back to the last century. Operation Overlord - September 4th, 2027

On our Operation Overlord Tour, you will follow the Allied soldiers, sailors, and airmen from where they trained for D-Day in England, to where they fought in the Normandy Campaign during World War II. Our tour is based on thousands of hours of interviews that Stephen E. Ambrose and his support staff conducted with the veterans who made the landings on the invasion beaches of Omaha and Utah—and then survived to liberate Paris and beyond. In studying the battlefields with veterans and other scholars, Ambrose also spent hundreds of hours on the ground analyzing the terrain. The cumulative research started by Ambrose is the foundation for this tour, and every historian who leads it has conducted their own WWII research. All of them have traversed the same ground trod by our soldiers and veterans and Ambrose. Thanks to their canon of knowledge, we can proudly state that our D-Day tour offers an experience unmatched in its authenticity. You will hear tales of courage that will deepen your understanding of our troops’ survival skills—their American ingenuity, endurance, bravery and humor—and the unimaginable sacrifices that drove our fighting men to win WWII.

The southern campaign from Charleston, South Carolina, to Yorktown, Virginia, was the final, decisive struggle. Civil War Tour: Mississippi River Campaign - October 16th, 2027

The Civil War: Mississippi River Campaign Tour visits the sites and battlefields fought along the Mississippi River, including Memphis, Shiloh, Vicksburg, Port Hudson and New Orleans.

Vietnam War: A Snapshot 2027

Vietnam War: A Snapshot 2027

Vietnam evokes vivid images of jungles, helicopters, and distant battlefields, holding different meanings for each generation.

Revolutionary War: Boston to Quebec - May 22, 2027

Tour Itinerary: https://www.wetravel.com/i/696a9e19eb4faa70ba4bdb2d#day-1-may-22ndOur Revolutionary War Tour: Boston to Quebec explores the origins of the conflict, the battles that raged across the northern theater, and the key players in that drama. They involved Patriots, Loyalists, Redcoats and Native Americans. You’ll walk battlefields where ragtag rebel forces clashed with one of the most feared armies in the world. You’ll meet the famous, the infamous, and the villainous figures who played out the dramatic struggle to forge a new nation.Boston. The birthplace of the American Revolution. In this bustling port city, angry colonists risked their lives to protest taxation without representation and set out to mount an audacious rebellion. At last, the stunning American victory at Saratoga in 1777 brought about surrender of an entire British Army corps and the entry of France into the war on America’s side.

Scotland Jacobite Rising - August 11th, 2027

Scotland Jacobite Rising - August 11th, 2027

Up the Slot: Guadalcanal and the Solomons - August 12th, 2027

D-Day to the Rhine - September 4th, 2027

WWII Poland and Germany Tour - September 4th, 2027

The WWII Poland and Germany Tour covers the beginning and end of World War II. The first shots of the war rang out in Gdansk, Poland, on September 1, 1939. Five years later the Warsaw Uprising commenced on August 1, 1944, and lasted for 63 days as the Polish resistance Home Army fought valiantly to liberate Warsaw from Nazi Germany. On May 8, 1945, the final surrender of Nazi Germany took place at Karlshorst.Your WWII tour of Poland and Germany begins in Gdansk, which is also the site of another historic push for freedom — the Solidarity movement led by electrician Lech Walesa.

He also recognized the primary significance of the rail lines as the links that tied the Confederacy together from east to west. Connecting the Gulf of Mexico to Kentucky, the rails were the sinews of the rebellion—and the cords of Union that Federal armies must control to win the war. Vietnam War: A Snapshot 2027

Vietnam War: A Snapshot 2027

Vietnam evokes vivid images of jungles, helicopters, and distant battlefields, holding different meanings for each generation.
