We were delighted to hear from George Luz, Jr. that while working on some household projects during the pandemic, he discovered an old VCR tape of an interview with this father, George Luz, a member of Easy Company. We are excited to share George’s story and a video clip of his father’s interview.
George Luz, Jr. Finds Rare Interview of His Father, Easy Company Member George Luz
In August of 1998, my Dad attended a National Guard event at Camp Fogarty here in Rhode Island. I remember him talking about the event and then watching it on our local public access cable TV channel. Tom Kelly is a veteran, historian and a creator of local programming.
Fast forward to the summer of 2020. Like many of us our calendars had been cleared so we put our extra time to good use. While going through bin after bin down in the basement, I ran across one of old VCR tapes. Then, the light bulb went on. I knew exactly what was on the Kelly Vision tape. My father, George Luz, a member of Easy Company, a paratrooper with the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment.
But who still has a VCR? I had just jettisoned mine at the recycling center just two weeks earlier. So, I went to my oldest friend to see if he still had one, albeit a bit dusty.
I popped in the tape, and there he was for 6 minutes and 36 seconds. For me, it was the coolest thing to see my Dad again, talking about Easy Company, something that he was so proud to be a part of. I promptly called Trevor, my editor, and had the tape digitized, and we were off. We were able to create several short video clips of the interview with my father.
Some people may remember that he passed away about two years prior to when the “Band of Brothers” began filming, so there were no video interviews of my Dad in that miniseries. I have been blessed to be able to travel with Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours’ Senior Historian Christopher Anderson on the Band of Brothers® Tour. Chris always invites me on one evening, typically in Eindhoven, to share a presentation entitled, “Through My Father’s Eyes,” which includes photos, letters and stories about Easy Company along with some rare audio of the Men of Easy telling their story in their own words.
Well, we will now have a wonderful addition to that presentation for future Band of Brothers® Tours.
This brief video clip (1:02) is my Dad describing some of his experiences as an Airborne Paratrooper. Currahee!
Travel With George on the Band of Brothers® Tour
There are many reasons to travel on the Band of Brothers® Tour, but one is the opportunity to see George Luz, Jr.’s presentation, “Through My Father’s Eyes,” about Easy Company. Plus, he is just one heck of a nice guy!
