Revolutionary War Boston to Saratoga 2021

This tour of Revolutionary War Northern Theater sites was fascinating and enlightening. Rick Beyer is a very knowledgeable historian, and he and his wife Marilyn are engaging and convivial hosts. The final leg to Quebec was eliminated by COVID, but we got an extra day in Boston. There was a lot of history packed into eight days, but Rick and Marilyn were able to adjust the pace. (Since this was the initial offering of the tour, things were subject to change, anyway.) My favorite moments from the tour were the live cannon demo at the Fort at Number Four, and the portrayal of Baroness Frederik Charlotte Riedesel at The Marshall House in Schuylerville, NY. (I also enjoyed sampling the waters of the various Saratoga hot springs during our free afternoon in that city.) I signed up for this tour having gone on Rick’s Ghost Army Tour, so I knew what to expect. And I’m looking forward to the tour of the Revolutionary War Southern Theater sites.

Best Trip I Have Ever Taken

I took the trip in May 2016 as a birthday gift to celebrate my 5oth year of life. I took along a buddy of mine who knew very little about the Band of Brothers series or World War II. I was surprised how much he enjoyed the tour as well. It was no doubt the best trip I’ve been on. It was well worth every penny I spent, and actually exceeded expectations! Ron Drez was our guide and we couldn’t have asked for a better one. He was so knowledgeable with so many stories. He made the trip so special. Every day was a new adventure. I would suggest starting the trip in Toccoa, GA. It is longer and more money but worth it. It’s been almost 6 years later and I still have great memories of this tour! Simply the best!! I would go again, it was that good!

Mississippi Civil War Tour

Doing this tour while still fighting a pandemic was undoubtedly difficult. A few details probably suffered, but the knowledge given was first rate. This side of the Civil War was not taught in school, despite being vitally important. We learned so much. A small detail (I haven’t seen a better place to post), the tour would benefit from the purchase of personal earphones/microphones like we have had in oversea trips. It was hard to hear in New Orleans and along the mural levee, which has trucks sharing the space. Still, very happy we experienced. Thanks so much.

With James Arnold as our historian, he brought life to the battles fought. The tour manager, Nick, and our driver Hal, were exceptional. All three gentlemen worked together to provide a wonderful experience. The accommodations were excellent and meals provided were great. It is an experience well worth the cost and certainly would do it again! (Bring comfortable walking shoes!)

Revolutionary War Boston to Saratoga 2021

The inaugural tour (even without time in Quebec due to Covid quarantine) was a wonderful, informative experience. It enhanced the battles studied in school & educated about the lesser known ones in the NE USA. We learned about the patriots, British and loyalists participating in the politics, life and battles. My partner who isn’t a history buff, enjoyed this trip.

Our historian and tour manager, Rick and Marilyn Beyer were very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the region and
the battles. They ensured we had comfortable accommodations, and a variety of dining experiences.

Our bus driver, Debbie was pleasant and affable.

Some of my favorite parts of the trip were: Battle of Valcour on Lake Champlain, Boston freedom trail, and The Marshall House where the wife/family of a German General hid out & helped the British wounded during Battle of Saratoga.

I can’t wait for S. Ambrose tours to add one or two other areas of the Revolutionary War experience.

Crazy Horse and Custer

There are not enough good adjectives to describe this tour. I consisted myself fairly knowledgeable about American Western history but, this tour proved me wrong. I learned a lot about the American Indian Wars on the great plains on this tour. John Langellier was super knowledgeable and communicate his knowledge with vigor and enthusiasm. Everyone was assigned a number, and every night at dinner, a number was picked and you won an autograph book by a western scholar. On several occasion, he had scholars speak to us at dinner about their expertise on the Plains War.

One could not ask for a better tour manager then Nick Scramuzz. He is the man that keep every thing moving on time and in order. When the airlines cancelled flights the night before departure, Nick got every one on different flights so they would not miss their connection. The ride through the Rocky Mountains was spectacular. If you deiced to take this tour next year, look for me, I plan to go again, to make sure I did not miss anything.

The Crazy Horse, Custer tour was a dream come true for a retired history teacher likr myself. I taught about the West for years, but actually seeing the sites made it all come to life. From the many great museums and forts, to The Little Bighorn, the Crazy Hose Memorial, Mt. Rushmore and Devils tower, to the amazing landscapes, it was just incredible. Nick Scaamuzza is a logistical genius, making every day run like clockwork, along with our super bus driver Yogi, who navigated the twisty turns of the Bear Tooth Highway like it was his own backyard. And what can I say about our historian John Langellier, who made the history all come to life. I will treasure our many conversations about history and our mutual love of Western movies forever. For anyone who loves Western History this tour is a MUST!!

Dr. Robert Mayer says:

This tour will exceed your expectations

We were lucky to have Rick Beyer led this tour and bring his passion for history and especially for this unique deception unit of WWII. As an earlier reviewer noted, you will talk about this the rest of your life.
In Luxembourg we attended a special dedication of the first Ghost Army monument in Europe and heard from the mayor of the city, US ambassador, European WWII veterans and a Ghost Army veteran on the uniqueness and effectiveness of this unit. Rick noted that other cities would have dedications and monuments on future tours. It was quite festive and also the next stop, Bastonge, Rick had arranged for a celebration of the GA veteran on tour. Both the Beyers are great storytellers and know their subject!

WWII Poland and Germany Tour

John Littlefield says:

WWII Poland and Germany Tour

This profoundly moving tour dramatically expanded my understanding of WWII in Europe, particularly the often over-looked (by Americans) heroism and resilience of the Polish people. Bookended by visits to the sites where the war began (in Gdansk) and ended (in Berlin), the tour included many of the most iconic locations of WWII. Highlights for me were: seeing the Polish Post Office building in Gdansk; walking through the ruins of Hitler’s bunker at the Wolf’s Lair; visiting the “Mila 18” memorial in Warsaw; contemplating the Holocaust at Auschwitz-Birkenau, and studying the large-scale battlefield where a million Russian soldiers broke through to Berlin. Other stops were more contemporary, such as the Gdansk shipyard and the Berlin Wall. Along the way, our tour leader Chris Anderson and several local guides did an outstanding job of describing exactly what we were seeing and placing it in historical context. Chris cares deeply about the history and meaning of the war, which helped to make this trip an unforgettable experience.

This tour was beyond our expectations. My husband’s Dad trained at Camp Toccoa and participated in the forced march from Toccoa to Atlanta. Even though he was transferred to the 502nd at Fort Benning, we were able to visit each place he jumped and fought. For my husband to be at the jump zone where his Dad landed 75 years earlier was an unforgettable experience. The celebration of liberation in Eindhoven was another experience we shall never forget. To actually visit the places I had taught about for so many years made this the trip of a lifetime. I only wish I had taken this trip earlier to share with my students and my father-in-law!

If ever I could call a tour “perfect,” this would be it. Jack Mountcastle is not only a walking encyclopedia, but he’s funny and entertaining. The tour was especially meaningful to me since I was able to walk where my Civil War relative walked, and share from his journal. Savannah, our “fixer” and Hal, the driver, were wonderful. An added attraction was the happy group of like-minded tour participants. We all learned so much and left with our heads filled with facts, and our hearts filled with new friendships.

This tour vastly exceeded my high expectations.

This tour is in a class of its own. Presented by our passionate guides, Rick and Marilyn Beyer, the tour is the story of people in a background of war. Be prepared for both tears and laughter as you personally experience the pain, passion, and experiences of a little known group of American GI’s interacting with the horror of the war. Without question, this tour is second to none!

If you can take but one tour in your lifetime, make it this one!

We didn’t only see history, we felt it. That’s what Rick and Marilyn Beyer did for this tour. They did not just show and tell …. they made us feel what happened 75 years ago. That can only be accomplished by those who love what they do. I had originally planned to tour on my own, but was convinced by my travel partner that an organized tour was the route to go. Little did I know that I would get hooked up with the Beyers. Ended up being a great decision. Our tour had it all …. history, education, personality, humor. Take this tour. You will talk about it for the rest of your life.

Ghost Army of WWII Tour

Harry Forsdick says:

An excellent tour of a fascinating subject

Although I am interested in history and travel to historic places in the USA, I knew and had traveled to more American Revolutionary and Civil War sites than the European World War sites. So, this tour showed me places and addressed topics that I had never experienced before. It was also more diverse in the types of places we went and subjects we heard about: Places in London related to the founding of the Ghost Army, Bletchley Park’s fascinating subject of code breaking, the actual place where the Ghost Army bivouacked while training in Britain during the buildup to D-Day, …

After crossing of the English Channel spent two and a half days traveling around Normandy in the most emotional part of the tour where you will get a thorough experience in the D-Day operations, the basics of the equipment (tanks and guns) used during the war, as well as famous Beaches of the Invasion and cemeteries where the English, Germans and Americans are buried.

In Rick Beyer, you not only have a guide who is knowledgeable in his subject, but is also the author of several fascinating books about the Ghost Army. As a historian, Rick is a natural storyteller and you will not be disappointed in his engaging way to telling you about what you are seeing. Rick’s wife Marilyn provides another point of view using her own dramatic storytelling talents.

The trip to Paris and subsequent day there gives you a small break from the grim reality of war — you have a day to explore Paris and all that it offers. If prior to Paris was action filled invasion, after Paris is where the Ghost Army got down to business of deception. As an amateur artist I particularly enjoyed a walking tour through the Grund in Luxembourg where Rick showed us paintings by members of the Ghost Army at the actual scenes painted.

Finally we toured a number of sites and museums relating to the end of WWII — as well as some famous sites of WWI battles.

In summary, this is an excellent tour that will educate, entertain and expand your interest in the European World War sites, battles and stories. The focus on the Ghost Army gives it a unique perspective and keeps you focused on a central theme while still understanding what else was going on from the D-Day invasion to the end of the war.

War in the Pacific - 2014

My son Ryan and I were on this tour in 2014. This was my first experience with SAHT, both of us were immensely impressed. If fact I have enjoyed 3 additional tours since then.
Starting on Oahu we viewed all of the key sights associated with the Japanese raid on Dec 7. Many of these were behind the scenes and not accessible to the average tourist.
From there we proceeded to Saipan. Tinian and Guam. All were very interesting and our guide Mr. Ron Drez was able to paint a picture of the fighting and historical significance that took place in every place we stopped. Driving across Tinian on what was in reality a ghost town compared to the frenzy of 1944 allowed you to transport yourself back to that time.
The high point of this trip was the time spent on Iwo Jima. Standing on top of Mount Surabaci accompanied by a handful of veterans was a humbling experience. Ryan and I watched as these men raised a flag exactly on the spot where the well known picture was taken. I was honored to be in the company of these heroes, sharing that experience with my son was priceless. Moments that neither of us will ever forget.
Like all SAHT tours all accommodations and arrangements were first class and amazingly organized.

2018 War in the Pacific and Iwo Jima Tour

I had been thinking about this Tour for five years and finally made a commitment to plan my calendar around this Extraordinary Opportunity this year. It so vastly exceeded my expectations on every level. Ron Drez and his wife, Judy, were both exceptional Guides and Hosts every step of the way. I thought I knew most everything about Pearl Harbor, but Ron’s connections and knowledge took us to places and stories that were all new, and added immensely to my historical body of knowledge. Amazing trips followed to Guam, Saipan and Tinian – places where my father had been during his service in WWII aboard the US Navy Attack Transport USS Oconto. The opportunity to retrace his journey was priceless.

The Crown Jewel Highlight, however was the Reunion of Honor flight and visit to Iwo Jima. Standing atop Mount Suribachi and walking along the Black Sand Invasion Beaches was a Lifetime Dream come true. The experience of being on Iwo Jima with the few remaining WWII Veterans who were there, along with young Marines serving today who hosted us on the island, made for one of the Best Days of my Life. Worth every penny and every day invested to get there! Thanks to Ron, Judy and Ambrose Tours for organizing and orchestrating an unforgettable Tour experience. I would do it again someday, without thinking twice about the decision.

Civil War Tour: Rivers, Rails & Mountains

Christine Strachan (Melbourne, Australia) says:

New SAHT experience did not disappoint!

Until booking this latest tour and then reading several books on this theatre of Civil War, I knew very little of how strategic these battles were. The loss of life by both armies rivalled the more well known battles such as Gettysburg and Vicksburg – such was the importance of holding the railroads.
Our historian Parker Hills detailed the movements of the armies at each stop; his maps make it clear what happened as you look over the landscape and battlefields. I loved everything about this tour – perhaps a highlight for me was being at the top of Lookout Mountain on a misty morning imagining how it would have been with the two armies clashing at the ‘Battle above the Clouds’.
All Museums, Mansions and sites extremely interesting, our Hotels exceptional!
Thanks to Parker, Mark and Marina for providing a memorable experience sure to become another permanent and popular Civil War Tour.

I took the Hallowed Ground Tour in May 2018 and have time to reflect on this marvelous experience. I read and watched quite a bit before the tour, but there is no substitute for visiting the sites where history was made. My highlights were standing on Little Round Top, walking Pickett’s charge, and seeing the Union river crossing site at Fredericksburg. My personal favorite was the Minnesota memorial at Gettysburg where the 1st Volunteer regiment held the Union line with an 82% casualty count on the 2nd day. Gerry P our historian was excellent in addition to his hidden musical talents. Matt B our guide was excellent as well. Fantastic trip w/ the Best Guide in the Business!

Just got back from the Poland portion of this trip (led by Chris Anderson) and it was an absolute great time. Between the nice hotels, nice bus, nice driver, excellent itinerary, but most of all, the best guide in the business in Chris Anderson, it was a top notch, unparalleled tour. Chris is not only knowledgeable but passionate about history and understands the sacredness of the locations that we visited, and this passion comes through in the way he explains things.
In addition to Chris, SAHT brings in local experts at Gdansk, Wolf’s Lair, Warsaw castle, and Krakow, among others. They are well versed in their areas of expertise and deliver stories and knowledge with an energy that conveys how important these areas are to them, and to history.
The hotel stay at the Hotel Zemek Ryn is an interesting one as a 15th century castle turned four star hotel is an interesting transformation. Even though it took me a little bit to feel comfortable, I hope this stays on the itinerary as it is one of the aspects that make this tour unique and special.
Overall, it is a great tour and well worth it. I also met some very nice and interesting people. Highly recommend!

My wife and I made the tour in 2016 and the post tour to Peleliu. This trip was incredible with access to normally closed areas on Ford Island and Hickam Field. Seeing the loading pits for the Enola Gay and Bockscar on Tinian and the enormity of North Field really helped to bring the size of the US commitment into perspective. Climbing the black sand beaches of Iwo Jima and then Mt Suribachi was followed by the opportunity to talk with survivors of the battle. On to Peleliu with its coral caves filled with Japanese saki bottles and seeing the relatively undisturbed leftovers of war was amazing. Ron Drez provided a lot of information and insight into the various sites. Highly recommend both the main trip as well as the Peleliu post tour. Only downside was heat and humidity on Peleliu, but that only helped to further elucidate the difficulties of that miserable battle. Thanks to Mark Lettow (earlier review) for bringing the flag for pictures atop Mt. Suribachi.

I was able to pay honor to my uncle who was a veteran of several Pacific battles before being killed on Saipan. I will be forever thankful that I was able to do that for our family. Pack smart and make room for a flag in your daypack!

Having visited most of the battlefields of Western Europe, this trip allowed me to round out my experience by visiting other battlefields of Eastern Europe.

Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours is the place for D-Day Tours

Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours is by far the leaders in keeping younger generations informed with regard to historical events and history of World War II on Facebook.

Content with regard to tours, past and future are encouraging and reminding people of the importance of the outcome of the war for present and future generations is informative.

The acknowledgement they give to the men who sacrificed themselves, especially on D-Day, not forgetting but honoring those who have been blessed to live a long and fulfilled life, must be the only place where these men to whom we all owe the life we enjoy today are really honored.

Their D-Day Tours are well known and if one ever decide to attend a D-Day tour Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours is the place to do it, first on Facebook and then joining the actual tour.

Thank you for keeping us informed and all the best I hope you will be with us for a long time. Your valuable input in the most important time in world history is to be commended.

This tour was fantastic!

This tour was fantastic! There were 12 of us and during our two weeks together we all got to be close friends. We saw all the places, from Normandy through Belgium to Germany, and got an excellent look at all the places where history was made. Kevin is very knowledgeable and did a great job shepherding us from village to museum. Because we had a WW II vet on board, we were able to see and experience many moving moments. We highly recommend this tour.

Amazing, inspiring and challenging experience

Ultimately PEOPLE made the trip. Our group was enthusiastic, knowledgeable, friendly and positive….Being able to converse and rub shoulders with the old gentlemen vets was one of the highlight. Our brief time on Iwo was historic, mythic, eerie, prayerful and extremely moving. Suribachi looming ominously over the killing fields and cold surf washing up on the iconic black sand beaches, it was an amazing, inspiring and challenging experience.

WWI Tour: Western Front

Highly recommended!

I enjoyed a terrific tour of the WWI battlefields in Belgium & France last fall with historian Chris Anderson! It was the 100th anniversary of the US entering the war and it was an amazing 2-wk trip that began in Brussels then on to the Battle of Waterloo that re-drew the map of Europe in the early 19th century and set the stage for events leading up to WWI. My good friend and travel companion, Jim Hutson convinced me to go and I’m so glad that I did. Highly recommended!

Mike Johnson

My son and I took this tour some years ago and are still talking about it. The tour and it’s guide were fist class. I have been to Normandy since and it was more impressive having been with Ambrose before.

John and Cindy Lindstedt

Stephen Ambrose Tours certainly covers strategy and the high level of a military campaign, but they have the great ability to collect much anecdotal information about the average GI and that is what gives the color and humanist to their tours.

— John Lindstedt

Rob Thibodeaux

I can't describe the experience completely. I really had a great time on this trip and I highly encourage you to choose this trip. If you have been on it before the second time is certainly worth it.
